    Don’t get the summertime “browns”

Isn’t that supposed to be summertime “blues?” Well, not when you are expecting! Watch out for those summertime (wintertime, anytime) BROWNS! I am talking about Chloasma, often know as the mask of pregnancy.

The pregnancy hormones estrogen and progesterone are thought to cause the the pigment-producing skin cells to react more strongly to sunlight. This causes the “mask” or dark brown splotchy areas on the chin, cheeks, nose and forehead.

Chloasma affects up to 70% of all pregnant women. Good news? Not really, but there is some good news – it is preventable by sun avoidance and daily use of sunscreen with SPF of 25 or higher.

When choosing a sunscreen, be sure that it includes titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. And I can personally recommend the Belli Skincare Anti-Chloasma Facial Sunscreen. Yes, personally. I LOVE this product so much that I use it everyday – summer, winter, spring and fall. It is light, non-greasing, has a great subtile tint. Goes fine under makeup and adds just a touch of smoothness when I don’t want to wear makeup.http://www.babybeat.com/belli-sunscreen.html

Belli products are great. Made specifically for pregnant mothers – or those of us that just like to use something we know is safe. Nothing in any of their products will harm an unborn baby. This company was based on setting a higher standard for prenatal safety excluding ingredients with even remote links to birth defects or other problems with pregnancy.

    Eggs! Fresh Eggs!!

It’s a known fact that a woman has all the eggs she will ever have when she is born – about one million of them. Lots of potential for babies, right?! Well, it isn’t quite that simple. From day one these eggs start to self-destruct and are absorbed into the body. Only about 300,000 of these eggs will remain by the time a girl reaches puberty. Of these, only about 300 will mature and be released, one every month for approximately 25 years.

Beginning around her first menstral cycle, a woman’s body begins preparing her eggs for possible fertilization. The peak years for egg maturation and release are during a women’s mid- to late-twenties. Before that, menstration may occur without eggs being released.

By the time a woman reaches her thirties,  she normally still has plenty of eggs left in her ovaries, but around her mid-thirties the follicles that surround and release the eggs may become less responsive to hormonal signals. And at the same time the self-destruction of pre-eggs continues. This is the true determination of a woman’s biological clock. And every woman’s clock is as individual as they are. For some woman, their viable eggs are exhausted early and they are unable to conceive even when still young. For others, they are able to have babies even into their forties with no problems. Unfortunately, there is really no way to determine what any woman’s body is set to do. One of the best ways to estimate is look at their mother and grandmothers.

With all this being said, it is not realistic to suggest that women should try to have their children before they are thirty. There are so many other factors that determine when motherhood is right for an individual. And statistics from the American Society of Reproductive Medicine show that over 65% of women over 35 have no difficulty conceiving. And the fastest growing group of mothers in this country are in the age range of 35-39.

Are you going to find out the sex of your baby?

There are always a million questions asked when you first let people know that you are expecting. And among the first always seems to be the inevitable “Are you going ot find out the sex?” So… What will it be? Do you think you will find out the sex?

Today, approximately 80% of moms-to-be find out the sex of their unborn babies. Only 20% go for that old-fashioned surprise. And did you know that of those finding out, 5% do not tell anyone until after the baby is born. Now, that would be a tough secret to keep!
